Mission Statement:
By engaging teenagers from underserved neighborhoods in local and
international service-learning projects, The Pangaea Project promotes
the development of leadership skills, increases global awareness, and
fosters a commitment to work towards social change, profoundly
transforming both the participants and their communities.
The Program:
The
Pangaea Project is a nine-month leadership development program that
empowers low-income high school students to become local community leaders with global
perspectives. The program is designed around local and international service-learning,
community leadership, social action, human rights, team-building, and global
awareness. Each year, a specific social justice issue such as Housing
and Homelessness, Environmental Justice or Labor Rights and Fair Trade is
selected to serve as the theme, providing the framework to make local
and global connections. The goal is to
inspire participants to recognize their own capacity to be agents of change by
exposing them to inspiring local and international grassroots community
leaders. Students meet with and work
alongside these empowered change-makers, people who have overcome adversity in their own lives and
devoted themselves to organizing others to join them in working on solutions to challenging issues that their
communities face.
Our Philosophy:
The
founders of The Pangaea Project chose the name Pangaea to inspire an
image of a reunited world, believing in the innate capacity of all
youth, regardless of socio-economic status, to be contributing members
of both their own communities and the broader world. By engaging in
activities that have a positive impact on communities, low-income
teenagers will feel awakened, valued, and hopeful, resulting in
compassionate, empowered, and globally competent leaders.
Pangaea is the name of the original Supercontinent 200,000,000 years
ago when all of the continents were connected, and the earth was one.
